Lavrov Highlights Expanding Russia, Africa Partnership

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s determination to fully realize the potential of cooperation with African nations during the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Cairo on Saturday.

Lavrov noted that relations between Russia and African states are steadily broadening. “Russian-African partnership is developing steadily across all areas, with substantive and trusting political dialogue continuing at the highest levels,” he stated at the opening session.

He highlighted that trade with Africa increased by 13% last year, reaching nearly $28 billion, while economic collaboration and humanitarian connections are also strengthening. “This is far from the limit. We are committed to fully unlocking the huge potential of our practical cooperation,” he added.

Moscow has invited African partners to explore opportunities within Russian markets, pointing to strong prospects for expanding trade with sub-Saharan countries through direct links with Russian businesses.

Lavrov also stressed the importance of national-currency settlement systems, describing them as vital for “ensuring stable trade and economic transactions and protecting investments.” He noted a growing share of ruble-based settlements in mutual trade.

Beyond economic engagement, Lavrov underscored Russia’s role in supporting African nations’ security, particularly in counterterrorism efforts. He further encouraged African states without embassies in Moscow to establish diplomatic missions, mentioning that Botswana and Togo have already announced plans to do so.
